Any number of unexpected expenses can blow up your budget, but you can avoid the destruction that sometimes follows with a little foresight and no small measure of discipline. Establish an emergency fund. Shoot for an amount that equals a few months of salary by contributing as little as $50 to $100 per paycheck to that account. When a large unexpected expense occurs, you'll be happy you could tap into this reserve.
